First Women have the last word — with Katy Moss

The business woman I most admire is Karren Brady because she is strong, dignified, hard working and has faced challenges in an all-male world from a young age. She hasn’t compromised herself along the way.

To juggle my work and life balance I switch off totally at weekends and write copious lists.

My biggest career break was having a job created for me to manage 11 schools (this turned out to not be my future because I have taken over the family business).

The biggest influence on my career was having experienced a couple of managers who treated people badly and in a more traditional sense, I knew I wanted to be different, it has driven me to find another way. I thank them for showing me how not to be.

One thing that makes me mad in business today is duplicitous behaviour – say what you mean, mean what you say, then we are all on the same page – how hard can it be?

Are boardroom quotas are necessary or nuts? Nuts, everything should be equal and if you have to think about it, it’s not, it should best person for the job. Idealistic maybe. I suppose they enable change to happen fast.

My one tip on negotiating a pay rise is to demonstrate what value you have added, it may mean keeping track of things you have done, but if you don’t, no-one else will. Hard to argue with facts and figures.

In five years I see myself still doing what I am doing, only better, smarter and focusing more on putting back into the industry and community for a sustainable future.

My number one piece of advice to young women starting their careers is to have the right attitude and be open to learning and change. Be confident and not cocky.

My favourite wind down activity is cycling on my new road bike and enjoying a gin and tonic—obviously not at the same time,

The last book I read was Our Iceberg is Melting: Changing and Succeeding Under Any Conditions by Holger Rathgeber and John Kotter.

The one thing I can’t live without is my Dior Airflash foundation– ‘spray ‘n’ go’!
