Modelling excellence: how individuals and organisations get outstanding results

If you observe how successful people behave and communicate, and you discover their beliefs and values,  you can tap into a recipe for success by installing those same patterns of thinking, communication, beliefs and values in yourself.

The human potential is to grow. You only have to look at young children as they learn to walk, talk, read and write to see that potential. Children ask a lot of questions, which helps them to learn, grow and take massive leaps forward.

As you grow older, you are still learning and growing, and it is easy to get stuck in habits and patterns of behaviour that no longer serve you. The universe offers a wealth of opportunities to learn, grow and development yourself in many different ways. Here are four of them:

Modelling excellence

Have you ever been moved by a great presenter and said to yourself, ‘I wish I could be as good as that.’ In business, it’s called benchmarking the competition, in terms of developing yourself and in neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) it’s called modelling excellence.

Perhaps you are a really good communicator, or you excel in sales and marketing, while anything technical or linked to accounts is a real challenge.  NLP is the study of human excellence and how outstanding individuals and organisations get their outstanding results.

The applications are enormous. It means if someone is highly skilled in a particular area such a team management or leadership, you can ‘model excellence’.

If you observe and listen carefully to how successful people behave, how they communicate, discover their beliefs and values – to literally understand ‘how they do what they do,’ then you are tapping into a recipe for success that you can duplicate by installing those same patterns of thinking, communication, beliefs and values in yourself.

Action point: Consider who would be good models of excellence for you? Who is doing what you want to be able to do? Who is achieving what you want to achieve?

Learning through experience

Do the most successful people in the world always get it right? No. And the good news is that you can learn through experience.

Consider that whenever you take action, there are only two possible outcomes; you either get what you want, or you don’t. And people will tell you that when they don’t achieve the result they wanted it was for reasons beyond their control, like “I was late because of the traffic”, “I didn’t have enough time to finish the report”, or “I was too busy”. These are really just excuses.

The problem is, most people actually believe that their excuses are true.  So your task now is to pay attention to what’s working in your life, learn from what is not working and get rid of all your excuses.

Remember, you always get a result. If it’s not the one you want, you have the power and the ability to change.

Action point: A powerful belief to adopt is there’s ‘no such thing as failure; only feedback’.

Givers gain

‘Giver’s Gain’ is the philosophy behind Business Networking International (BNI) – a phenomenally successful organisation that offers powerful opportunities to share ideas, learn and grow through networking successfully.

You’ve probably heard that saying – ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know’. As a past educational coordinator for one of the millions of chapters around the globe, it’s a great way to sharpen your ability to build trust and credibility of you, your products and services in less than sixty seconds in a memorable way once a week.

Although I’m no longer affiliated with a chapter, two years later I still collaborate with the many successful entrepreneurs I connected with at that time.

Action point: Your level of success is dependent on your level of thinking and the people you choose to surround yourself with. Are you inspired by the people around you right now?

It’s impossible not to learn

What I have learnt is that it is impossible not to learn. On the road of life, whether it is through journaling your experiences be they good, bad or ugly, hiring a coach or mentor, travelling, attending training programs, networking, meditating, reading, watching movies or a documentary, spending time with friends, family or strangers, or out in nature, there is always more to learn and discover.
