First Women have the last word, with Abi Wright

The business woman I most admire are the women making their own way, because it’s hard and takes a lot of strength. The women around me constantly amaze me.

To juggle my work and life balance I get up very early and love my iPad for working on the train, so I can focus on my kids when I get home.

My biggest career break was realising there was a gap in the market to promote spas and the spa industry in a completely new and different way.

The biggest influence on my career are my children. No matter how hard my day has been, they are the reason for getting up in the morning and doing it all over again with just as much enthusiasm.

One thing that makes me mad in business today is seeing people give up, especially when it comes to nurturing their teams.

Boardroom quotas are necessary or nuts? I understand why they exist, but I don’t think it’s the right route to equality. Men and women bring different qualities to the boardroom, but ultimately it should be about the person themselves.

My one tip on negotiating a pay rise is to think about it from the employer’s perspective – is it the right time to ask? Are you presenting your point in a way that they can see a benefit to them? Most employers would love to pay all their staff more than they do, but they have their own budgets they have to adhere to, so all financial decisions have to be made with consideration.

In five years I see myself continuing to build a bigger, better and more inclusive spa industry

My number one piece of advice to young women starting their careers is to decide what you want and go for it with both strength and flexibility. It sounds like a cliché, but if you work hard and consistently with integrity there are few things that will get in your way.

My favourite wind down activity is spending time with my children, partner and the dogs.

The last book I read was The Hungry Caterpillar with my youngest, who just turned one.

The one thing I can’t live without is my iPad. It’s my key to getting everything done on the move.
