Google is addressing gender equality with new range of emojis representing working women and men.
The internet giant has revealed that 11 emojis, which depict women in various professions including business, healthcare, education, technology and industry, have been approved by Unicode Technical Committee.
In May, Google proposed 13 new emojis to be added to the Unicode standard “with a goal of highlighting the diversity of women’s careers and empowering girls everywhere [and] to better reflect the pivotal roles women play in the world.”
Google noted that existing emojis confined men and women to stereotypical gender roles, where men were depicted as policemen, doctors and lawyers, while women are represented with icons that generally convey beauty such princess, bride and dancing female.
Given that young women are the biggest users of emojis, the new additions is one of the platforms Google is using to communicate the women in technology agenda to females.
It said: “These new emoji are one of several efforts we’re making to better represent women in technology, and to connect girls with the education and resources they need to pursue careers in STEM.”
The 11 emojis will be available in male and female options in all skin tones, creating more than 100 options to choose from. And to further diversify Google’s emojis, the Unicode is adding male and female versions of 33 existing emojis, including a female runner, weightlifter, policewoman and a male getting a haircut.
