Luck can play a significant part role in the success of many businesses, this is not what has seen my company – or any other thriving businesses for that matter – succeed. Instead, it has been working smart.
Since launching my business over a decade ago, I’ve come across many people who believe that I’m just another ‘lucky one’ who happened to have the right business idea, at the right time.
I owe my success to the fact that I’ve been consistently implementing rules and ideas with passion to perform and achieve. People who have achieved their goals in life have one thing in common; they have enormous passion and work discipline. But as with anything, implementing these traits is more difficult than it initially sounds.
With this in mind, here are my top tips for achieving success, not just for entrepreneurs or business leaders, but for anyone wanting to meet a life goal.
Overcome your limitations
The biggest barrier to success is yourself. Everyday I hear excuses from people as to why they can’t achieve something, from ‘if I had more money’ to ‘if I was younger’. It’s these negative thoughts that are standing in the way of your success.
Ask yourself what it is that you want to achieve, write it down and then figure out the practical steps that you need to take in order to get here. It may be that you can achieve your goal tomorrow or it may be in 12 months’ time. Either way, you will only overcome your limitations if you build up to that end goal with smaller steps.
If for example you want to learn a new language ready for a month long trip to that destination in a years’ time, rather than just stating this, you need to research whether you’d like to learn by going to face-to-face lessons, through an app or through a website.
You then need to figure out when you’ll be able dedicate time to this activity and set it aside in your planner. You could then set yourself smaller challenges along the way such as writing to someone in that language in two months’ time, then having a conversation in four months’ time etc. Setting these smaller goals will help you towards an end goal of spending a month in that country and will seem like less of an impossible challenge.
Build your confidence in your abilities
All too often, I hear people saying ‘I could never do that’ and I see people around me wasting their potential just because they don’t believe in themselves. This is actually a very difficult challenge but is most definitely achievable with the right motivation.
Your confidence will naturally begin to build as you begin overcoming limitations, but you can also build your confidence through daily practice. Only practice makes perfect and if you repeat something every day, you will see improvements.
You should take time to reflect on what you’ve already achieved on a regular basis, and this will help you work towards your next goals.
Achieve something you’ve previously thought impossible
This doesn’t have to be something huge and it doesn’t even have to be something that is related to your end goal. However, achieving something you thought impossible, will have a knock-on impact to all other aspects of your life.
I’m a firm believer that if you are good in sport, you are good in business because the route to success for both of these is related. They are both target driven and involve teamwork and focus. Therefore, if you’re trying to achieve more in business, why not set yourself some fitness goals too?
Achieving in one area in life will help you to believe that you achieve in all aspects of life.
Create a ‘time saving and money making formula’
Success is all about efficiency so it’s crucial that you find a formula that enables you to work productively. This may take time because everyone works in different ways and what works for me for example may not be right for you.
You should therefore try different tactics regularly until you find the working method that’s right for you. That may be creating task lists, it may be going for a walk every morning or it may be implementing your attitude to fitness to your working life.
There’s nothing to be lost from trying different methods and you’ll be surprised of the impact this can have.
Achieving success in the business world in particular, is always more challenging than you think it’s going to be. All aspirers will face bad experiences and obstacles, but it’s important to stay positive, because success will come if time and effort are invested into achieving your goal. It’s also crucial to remember that everyone has the ability to learn and develop, and meet their goals in life.
